Self Debrief
Every planThe briefing supported your GO / NO-GO call. The debrief asks how it actually went, while the flight is still in your head. It does not change your WX Score. Self Debrief is on every plan, Free included.
When it shows up
Every plan, Free included. You can open Self Debrief from the trip once it is past its planned arrival (or actual arrival when known). Reminders (the bell To do, the review email button, and the Self-debrief push) wait until the leg is confirmed Flown (ADS-B match or you mark it flown). A leg marked Flown, verify needs that confirmation before any review or debrief reminder goes out. Until confirmed, PlaneWX may only ask Did you fly?, either inside the usual post-flight review email or as its own push. Look for:
- To do in the bell (top of the app) after the leg is confirmed Flown. It stays until you start the debrief or mark the flight Didn't fly, and clears after 7 days.
- A Self-Debrief chip on the past-trip card (available from planned or actual arrival), the Needs debrief filter, or My Flights, then My Debriefs
- Self-Debrief in the trip ... menu, or Trip, then Self Debrief on the briefing (same arrival timing as the chip)
- Debrief This Flight on the existing post-flight review email, not a second email. The email waits for confirmed Flown. It hides once a debrief exists, or if you turn the reminder off. Before confirmation, the same email can instead ask Did you fly?, under the same Post-Flight Feedback toggle
- An iOS push after confirmed Flown, between about 1 and 6 hours after planned arrival, when the Self-Debrief push setting is on and the app can receive it. Before confirmation, a separate Did you fly? push can arrive instead, on its own toggle
Start is enough. The first save creates the row and the nudge can stop. There is no debrief SMS. If PlaneWX cannot tell whether you flew, the bell asks Did you fly? first. Answering I flew turns it into a debrief reminder.
What you fill in
Top to bottom: flight purpose, navigation methods, Rate this flight, mental sharpness, FRAT look-back, discipline, weather, then the phases. There is no Overall phase card. Rate this flight covers that. Answer what is useful; no question is required to save.
Navigation methods
How you actually navigated (GPS, VOR, ILS, RNAV, pilotage, dead reckoning, ATC vectors). Pick all that applied.
Rate this flight
Stars are how did you do, not how fun it was. Challenge, confidence, comfort, and whether you would fly it the same way sit on the same card.
Mental sharpness
1-5. Slip tags and contributing factors only appear at 3 or below. Honest beats polite.
FRAT look-back
How the FRAT picture compared to what you felt in the airplane (fatigue, pressure, get-there-itis). If you skipped FRAT before departure, you can say why. See FRAT.
Discipline rows include checklist, sterile cockpit, Vr / Vx / Vy, centerline, Vref, and fuel. Weather asks whether ceiling, wind, turbulence, icing, and convective matched the brief. Phase notes can be marked Follow up. Every row can take a short note, including the ones you did.
Saves as you go. Saved stays on the card after a successful write. A failed write shows Not saved.
Dictate debrief
Tap Dictate debrief, then the keyboard microphone, and talk. PlaneWX sorts your words into the debrief. Only what you say is filled. One takeaway is required (a lesson, a miss, or nothing notable). Unsure items go to general notes. You review and confirm before save. PlaneWX does not record or keep audio. You submit as usual.
Squawks, lessons, and currency
- Open squawks on that tail show the next time you pick the aircraft on a new trip
- Lessons stay on the debrief. They are not a public feed
- Mark a lesson Worked on it. Tap it again to clear it; the label then reads Worked on it, undo
- Lessons you add from the discipline or weather chips, or from the FRAT look-back card's Add as a lesson button, remember where they came from. Lessons you type stay as you wrote them
- Night landings and instrument approaches you log here feed currency on Insights (FAR 61.57 windows from what you actually reported, not from ADS-B)
What stays private
Private notes stay in your account except when an AI assistant you connect yourself reads them, up to 300 characters, or up to 400 characters when you ask for full details. Mentors, Trip Watchers, the public profile, groups, and Insights still never see them.
Mentors and CFIs
One flag: Self-debrief access on that person in My Crew. Off by default. When it is on, they see the full debrief except private notes, and they can leave one note for you. They cannot edit your answers.
Family watchers and public sharing never get this. A standing mentor still needs the flag. Matching for a fly / don't-fly call is not the same grant.
Reminders
Profile notification settings include Self-Debrief Reminders. On by default, and offered in onboarding next to the review-email toggle. Turning it off hides the button on the review email. The in-app menu stays. The bell has its own setting, Flight to-dos in the bell, in the bell's settings panel. Turning it off stops new debrief and Did you fly? items in the bell. It does not change the push or the post-flight email. The Did you fly? push has its own toggle, separate from Self-Debrief Reminders; see iOS Push Notifications.
